Citizen science: the birds of the gardens
Marimurtra is not only a very beautiful garden with visually appealing plants. Carl Faust, the founder of the garden, created it for the main purpose of an area for scientific projects. One important scientific project nowadays is the bird observation project ocells dels jardins. It is a citizen science platform where data about how many and which birds breed in which place from all over Catalonia comes together and is available for both citizens and scientists. The data is used to understand why and when birds visit the garden and find answers to questions like: Do seed eaters visit gardens more often when natural food is scarce in cold winters? Ocells dels jardins also shares interesting data presented using diagrams on its website (https://www.ocellsdelsjardins.cat/index.php?m_id=1164)
In this garden the project started in 2019 and continues today. In each area (the Garden is divided into three main areas) is a bird feeder where the birds are being observed once a week, always at the same time. The type of bird that has been seen there and the quantity are being reported and uploaded every Friday to the website orcells dels jardins.
Did we catch your interest? If you have a garden yourself, a balcony or even a public park nearby, you can also participate in this citizen science project. You can count and identify birds every day, one time a week or even one time a month. Every data counts! Sign in at the website (https://www.ocellsdelsjardins.cat/) and become part of an important science project!
