The cultivation and uses of palm trees are the focus of the 4th Marimurtra Monograph

This year’s Marimurtra Monograph – held last Saturday, October 19 – focused on the botanical family of palm trees. The day featured two great experts in this field, who gave their presentations. On the one hand, Javier Segura (Palmasur) spoke with a presentation on palm trees used in Mediterranean gardens, and Teresa Garceran, philologist and gardener, explained the cultivation of palm trees and their uses in our area. As for the round table – in which the two speakers were joined by Marimurtra’s master gardener, Jordi Fàbregas, and the general director, Josep Borrell – it discussed the challenges of cultivating palm trees.

Javier Segura is an agricultural technical engineer and explains that he fell in love with gardening because in this field he can combine nature with art. When asked what the palm trees of the future will be, Segura points out that they will be the most rustic and those that require little maintenance:

For her part, gardener Teresa Garceran describes the main aspects that must be taken into account so that palm trees are kept in good condition:

planting
exposure/lighting
temperature
ambient humidity
irrigation
fertilizers
pruning
pests and diseases

On a practical level, Teresa Garceran suggests two palm trees that hold up very well indoors and two more for outdoors:

The Conference ended with a guided tour to observe the diversity of palm trees in the Garden by Pere Fraga, botanical curator of Marimurtra. The following video contains the two full presentations and also images of the guided tour to learn about the palm trees of Marimurtra.
