Laurel

Description

This is an evergreen tree, usually about 10 m tall, with smooth, simple, dark green, glossy leaves. Its inflorescences are small, whitish-yellow umbels (arranged in the shape of an umbrella). The fruit is a black, fleshy, ovoid berry, approximately 1.5 cm long. Flowering time is in early spring, while fruiting takes place between October and November.

As medicinal properties, it is good for the digestive system, as it stimulates the appetite, digestive secretions and intestinal movements, facilitating the digestion of food. In the respiratory system, it favours the expulsion of mucus and has bactericidal actions, so it helps to alleviate cold symptoms. It also helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and is slightly diuretic. It is also widely used in gastronomy and culture.

Historically, in the Middle Ages it was used to crown poets, artists and sages. This tradition is of Roman origin, as they crowned victorious generals when they entered the city. Today, it is a symbol of triumph and of Mediterranean culture. In the language of flowers, a secret code that was very popular in the Victorian era in England when they could not express themselves openly, the laurel signifies power, victory and glory.
