It can reach 12 metres in height, with a very dense crown: There can be up to 30 leaves.
The leaves are evergreen, fan-shaped, with thorns and silver-blue. They are very large: up to 1.5 metres long and 1.8 metres wide.
The dry leaves do not fall and provide shelter for birds, insects and plants. The flowers are grouped in long hanging clusters, up to 5 metres long, and are cream-coloured.
The fruit is orange in colour and turns black when ripe.
There are 3 specimens in front of the pond in the Mediterranean garden. The oldest is 6 metres high. It is not known when it was planted, but because of its height it is thought to have been planted at the beginning of the garden.
