Description

It can reach 12 metres in height, with a very dense crown: There can be up to 30 leaves.

The leaves are evergreen, fan-shaped, with thorns and silver-blue. They are very large: up to 1.5 metres long and 1.8 metres wide.

The dry leaves do not fall and provide shelter for birds, insects and plants. The flowers are grouped in long hanging clusters, up to 5 metres long, and are cream-coloured.

The fruit is orange in colour and turns black when ripe.

Marimurtra’s specimens

There are 3 specimens in front of the pond in the Mediterranean garden. The oldest is 6 metres high. It is not known when it was planted, but because of its height it is thought to have been planted at the beginning of the garden.

The seeds are edible. It does not need much water to live. That is why it is widely planted in streets, parks and gardens.
