Scientific name: Pinus canariensis C. Sm.
Family: Pinaceae
Origin: Canary Islands
Year planted: Unknown
Flowering: Spring
It is a large tree: it can exceed 40 metres in height. It grows very fast in the first few years, and then grows more slowly, and widens.
The leaves are evergreen. They are borne in threes and are needle-shaped. The male flowers are grouped in small yellowish cones.
The cones are light brown.
Marimurtra’s specimen
You will find a large 15 metre specimen at the bottom of the Mediterranean garden.
You will see that it has many more leaves and seems more flexible than other types of pine trees, for example the white pine.
On the island of Tenerife, near the town of Vilaflor, there are two of the largest known specimens: the Pino de las dos pernadas, 56 metres high, and the Pino gordo, 45 metres high.
Its wood is of very good quality. For this reason, many of them are cut down in the Canary Islands, leading to deforestation of many forests.
