Description

It is a large tree, up to 30 metres high. The leaves are evergreen. They are borne in pairs and are needle-shaped.

The male flowers are grouped in small cones. They release pollen in the wind and pollinate the flowers of the pine cones. When the pine cones are ripe, they release the pine nuts.

Marimurtra’s specimens

You will find them all along the path next to the cliff. They are old specimens and are bent by the wind.

The most remarkable specimen in the garden is just over 8 metres high and has a crown span of 7.5 metres.

Did you know?

The stone pine is one of the most characteristic trees of the Catalan coast.

It was introduced in Catalonia many years ago, which is why it can be said that it is an autochthonous species, native to the area. Pine nuts are used in confectionery and many typical Mediterranean dishes.

Its wood is not of high quality, and is mainly used to make beams for railways, naval constructions, paper pulp…

The resin is used to make cosmetics and perfumes.
