Scientific name: Euphorbia ingens E. Mey. ex Boiss.
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Origin: South Africa
Year planted: Prior to 1985
Flowering: Autumn – Winter
It is a large candelabra-shaped cactus, which can reach 12 meters. The branches are erect and thick stems to accumulate water.
Only young specimens have leaves. In adult specimens they disappear and spikes come out.
The flowers are small and greenish yellow. The fruit is also small and red or purple in color when ripe.
The largest specimen in the garden is 4 meters tall. It was planted shortly after the frost of 1985, when many plants in the garden were damaged.
It is not known when the pre-frost specimens were planted.
The sap of this plant is very toxic and irritating. It is a defense mechanism of the plant against herbivorous animals. In the wild in Africa, specimens weighing more than a ton have been found.
