Green-Glaucous Bamboo

Description

It is one of the most characteristic plants of the Asian continent. It can create large, leafy forests. It grows in the form of upright canes that grow directly out of the ground, up to 12 metres high.

The cane grows very quickly. You can tell by the colour whether they are young or not:

  • Young cane: they are slender and graceful, bright green.
  • Adult cane: larger and lighter in colour.
  • Old cane: yellow or brownish in colour. When they have just dried out they turn brown.

The leaves appear at the top of the cane. They hardly ever flower. When they do, the whole plant flowers, and abundantly. They are very small and covered with a membrane.

Marimurtra’s specimens

It occupies a space with many stems and leaves up to 9 metres high. It is located in front of the palm grove. It is not known when it was planted, but it already appears in records from 1965.

Did you know that…?

The young, tender stalks of bamboo can be eaten. In China it is used for many things because it is both strong and flexible.

For example, it is used to build and manufacture many everyday objects, tools and utensils.
