It is a large palm, up to 25 meters with a dense crown. The leaves are very long: they can reach 5 meters.

They have a pinnate shape: different leaves come out of a central nerve. They are dark green in color and have spikes at the base.

The fruit is orange-yellow in color and can be eaten.

Marimurtra’s specimens

In the second garden there are three magnificent specimens. The tallest exceeds 8 meters in height.

It flowered for the first time in 1993. It is not known where it was planted, but due to its height it is believed that it was at the beginnings of the garden.

The three specimens also appear in the first inventory of 1954.

Did you know that…?

It blooms for the first time at around 40 to 65 years of age. Its fruits are called coquitos and are used for confectionery.

In Chile they extract a syrup, or palm honey, to sweeten meals and desserts.

Palm wine was formerly extracted from the sap, and an edible oil from the seeds. It is a protected species, and there is a sustainability and protection plan to cultivate it.
