Elephant foot yucca

Description

It is a large tree, up to 10 meters high. The most characteristic feature is the base of its trunk, which is reminiscent of an elephant’s leg. It has large leaves, up to 1 meter long, sword-shaped, pointy and bright green. The flowers are white and bell-shaped, and are edible. They are born in groups (inflorescence) in the middle of the leaves. The fruit is a black berry.

Marimurtra’s specimens

The most impressive specimen of the Garden is located on the coast of Sventenius. It measures about 7 meters high and 7 meters wide with 9 main trunks. You can clearly see how big the bases of the trunks are, the gray color of the bark and how the trunks look like elephants’ feet.

Did you know that…?

It is the national plant of El Salvador. Throughout Central America the flowers are used for cooking. It is widely used in gardening for its tropical appearance.
