The Marimurtra Botanical Garden has published the 2024-2025 Index Seminum, promoting seed exchange between botanical gardens and research centers worldwide. This year, the seed catalog includes 231 taxa from 57 botanical families, all sourced from the Garden’s collection.
Following the project to study traditional horticultural varieties, the Index Seminum incorporates 42 local horticultural varieties this year, encouraging their representation in other botanical gardens and fostering their study.
Last year, Marimurtra sent a total of 253 seed lots to 15 botanical gardens and research centers in 13 countries. Among the requests received, Mediterranean vegetation species from the Iberian Peninsula stand out. Additionally, archaeological research centers requested seeds to compare them with those found in excavations, helping to reconstruct part of our ancestors’ history and diet.
The Index Seminum, with its available seed catalog, serves as a connection network among botanical gardens worldwide, also involving research centers and universities. Its goal is to facilitate the free exchange of seeds among these institutions to promote the conservation and study of plant species.
